See "What is the Excrescence?"
Theory: If the Excrescence is a lower level of reality than Mourn, as Komaru Mikomi suggests, then theurgy could represent a flow of energy from the human soul into the Excrescence.
Alternate Theory: if the Excrescence is above the level of the soul but below the level of the Cosmos, theurgy could represent a connection "meant" to be to the powers, that instead is diverted at the level of the Excrescence.
This doesn't seem to fit with the "theurgy is broken promises" thing, but I thought it might kick off some discussion of other, completely unrelated theories. |

I believe in the Excresence research thread, it indicated that the Issora were experimenting with theurgy *before* the Excresence was created; but that the Jitani ritual which led to the Excresence was actually in response to the Issora theurgy development.
But, given this, I would say there is a similarity between theurgy and the Excresence, if not a one-to-one relationship. |

Looking at the writeup, and the fact that the Issora was the traitor who showed the Jitani *how* to do what they did, and that Hideo called it "a weakness we think of as theurgy", I'd say we know at least in part how it was done.
Unfortunately, that doesn't tell me anything more about what it is, save that it might be considered in some way a flawed High Magic? |

Theurgy is making and breaking promises to the universe about your place in it. The universe doesn't like it, and reacts by trying to burn you out of itself, but even broken promises have power to change the universe.
This is not as mystical as it sounds. |
